Surf fishing at Island Beach State Park 6-14-2019

Sometimes your arm gets tired

I hadn’t gotten to the beach since May 23rd. The weather forecast was good, so I tired to get there around the bottom of the tide which was around 12:15 P.M. Unfortunately, plans don’t always work out the way we want, and I got to the beach around 1:30. I caught 2 short striped bass within the first hour there, and then I picked up 4 massive black drum. I did keep one, since I’d never caught one before, and wanted to see how they taste. There were some youngsters just up the beach from me who were kind enough to take some pictures, and work the video camera for me.
At the end of the day, I stopped back at the bait shop,(Betty and Nick’s in Seaside Park) to weight the one drum that I kept. It weighed 22 3/4 Lbs.
I had some people tell me that they are usually full of worms when they’re that big. I’ll be cutting him up tomorrow to see, so hopefully I’ll be able to get some clean meat out of this fish.
I doubt I’ll ever bring one home again just because of that, but they were a lot of fun to catch… my arms are so tired.
On the down side, I broke a line guide on on of my rods, and the level wind on my Penn International 965 had a problem and was not moving across the spool the way it’s supposed to.
Anyway here’s the video, enjoy
