It was the last Saturday of the 2017 regular bow season. I’d gotten into my tree stand nice and early, and set up waiting for the hunt to begin.
After a few hours, I noticed movement about 100 yards away, so I grabbed my binoculars to see what it was. I could see antlers, but he was heading away from me. I decided to try rattling him with a rattle-bag that I’d bought at Dick’s Sporting Goods a year or two ago since he was leaving, I figured I had nothing to lose. To my surprise, he turned and started heading towards me. I set the camera on record, and watched patiently as he approached.
Unfortunately, when you’re self-filming your hunts, the camera may not always be pointing exactly where you want so my shot was just inside the view of the camera instead of centered.
I placed my shot at the base of his neck, which isn’t a shot advisable to take, but way he was moving would not have given me a broadside shot.
This is my second mature buck, in as many years. All my past kills have been young bucks, with only one doe.
